When you receive a PDF catalog or spec sheet directly from a manufacturer, it is often a massive file (sometimes 20MB or more). If you upload a file that large to your website, it will take your customers a long time to download, especially if they are shopping on their phones.
Before adding a PDF to your Media library, you should make it “web-ready” by running it through a free online compressor like iLovePDF. This shrinks the file size down to a fraction of the original without making the text blurry.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Open a new tab in your web browser and go to ilovepdf.com/compress_pdf (or Adobe’s free online PDF compressor).
-
Click the large red Select PDF file button in the center of the screen and choose the oversized PDF from your computer.
-
On the right side of the screen, you will be asked to choose a compression level. Select Recommended Compression (this offers the best balance of high quality and small file size).
-
Click the black Compress PDF button at the bottom right.
-
The tool will process your document. Once it finishes, a new, much smaller, web-ready PDF will automatically download to your computer.
-
Return to your store’s dashboard. Navigate to Media > Add New, and upload this newly optimized version!
Pro-Tip: Rename Your Files for Better SEO! Before you upload the newly compressed PDF to your dashboard, take a second to rename the file on your computer. Instead of uploading a file named SCAN_9918274_REV2.pdf, rename it to something clean like brand-name-mattress-warranty.pdf. This looks much more professional and actually helps your website’s search ranking!
